ATHANASIOS C. LASKARIDIS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

A major cleanup operation was completed in Thebes, in an area adjacent to the railroad tracks near the camps, through the collaboration of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the Municipality of Thebes, and the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation.

The initiative was carried out with the support of the Cyclone Project, the Foundation’s large-scale cleanup program, which intervenes in areas of particular environmental significance throughout the country.

During the initiative, large quantities of waste, bulky items, and inert materials that had accumulated over many years, creating a serious environmental and health burden for the area, as well as significant risks to the operation of the railway network. In a single day, the Cyclone Project team covered approximately 650 meters along the railway line and removed 11,318 kilograms of waste, corresponding to 16,645 recorded items and a total volume of 141 cubic meters. Among the items collected were plastic objects, clothing and textiles, glass bottles and shards, metal objects, and aluminum cans.

Peggy Xirotagarou, Executive Director of the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, stated:

“Today’s initiative in Thebes is a significant effort with a substantial environmental and social impact. The Cyclone Project team worked intensively to remove a large volume of waste and restore an area that had been burdened for years.”

The Secretary General of Transportation, Stelios Sakaretos, emphasized that the initiative “is not just about cleanup, but about restoring safety, order, and reliability at a critical point in the railway network,” thanking the Foundation for its immediate response and decisive contribution.

The Mayor of Thebes, Georgios Anastasiou, described the initiative as essential and particularly important for the region, noting that it marks the beginning of a broader effort to create better conditions for everyone.

This initiative makes a substantial contribution to the revitalization of the area, the improvement of public health, and the enhancement of railway safety, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the state, local government, and civil society in addressing long-standing problems.
